YouTube’s lineup of original programming is perfect for cordcutters

It’s easy to think of YouTube as little more than the world’s largest collection of videos featuring cats, people falling down, and grainy concerts. Sure, if that’s what you’re looking for, the original video streaming giant has it all in spades. But as YouTube aims to join the ranks of streaming services like Netflix, Amazon, and Crave, it’s been quietly building a library of original shows.

YouTube’s original shows are part of YouTube Red, a subscription service that offers perks like ad-free viewing and the ability to watch clips offline. It also offers access to these exclusive YouTube-produced shows, which are dubbed YouTube Red Originals.

Unfortunately, YouTube Red isn’t available in Canada. Fortunately, many YouTube Red Originals are available to watch without a subscription to YouTube Red.

There are currently dozens of YouTube Red original series available to stream on YouTube right now, even in Canada. They range from reality shows like Ultimate Expedition and Mind Field, to comedies like Ryan Hansen Solves Crimes on Television and Do You Want to See a Dead Body?, to family programmings like Disney’s Hyperlinked and Fruit Ninja Frenzy Force.

For some series, only a select number of episodes are available to stream for free, while the rest are available for purchase through Google Play. If you don’t feel like buying any episodes at all there’s more than enough free content to keep you busy for the long haul.
